Arrival Training in Rome

Ciao a tutti! It’s Diana, back with another update on my ESC volunteer experience in Italy. July was an incredible month full of new experiences, some summer heat, and a few adventures in both Rome and Milano. While the summer heat made things challenging at times, I got to travel, meet new people, and enjoy Italy’s vibrant culture even more.

July started on an exciting note as I got the chance to travel to Rome for my ESC on arrival training. I was excited to visit the capital city, but even more so because I’d get to meet other ESC volunteers from different parts of Italy.

It was one of the best experiences so far. We did so many activities, worked together on projects, and learned a lot about teamwork, different volunteer projects, and how to make the most out of our time here.

It wasn’t all work, though! We had time to explore Rome and do some sightseeing. One day was entirely dedicated to exploring the city, and I was so happy to finally see Rome’s famous landmarks. The food, of course, was amazing (Italian food never disappoints). By the end of the week, I had made a ton of new friends, and we still keep in touch. It was such a great bonding experience and a perfect way to kick off the month..

I also took some time off to do the family vacation, this year we decided the destination will be Barcelona (Portaventura). We spent four days together We evand it was a much-needed break. Spending time with my family was the best, and my mom was so happy to see me again. Even though she misses me, she’s super supportive of me living this experience independently. It’s been such a valuable part of my personal growth.

Back in Milano, I learned that summer in Italy means unpredictable weather. You could be out enjoying the sunshine, and suddenly, you’re caught in a downpour. I quickly learned to carry an umbrella with me at all times, which reminds me a bit of Sweden’s unpredictable weather!

Despite the occasional rain, I had plenty of opportunities to enjoy the city. One of my favorite things to do is head to Duomo and watch the street performers. There’s always something happening there, and it’s such a lively atmosphere. Concerts have become a big part of my summer in Milano, and I feel lucky to experience live music in such a vibrant city.

July has been full of highs from connecting with fellow volunteers in Rome to discovering more about Milano and spending time with family and friends. Even though the summer heat was intense, it didn’t stop me from enjoying everything this country has to offer.
