My First Month in Milan: A Funny Adventure
Hey! I’m Hadeel Al Asseh, 26, from Jordan, currently navigating life in Milan for my European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program with Avis Lombardia. My first month here has been a mix of excitement, confusion, and lots of carbs!
Arrival: Pizza to the Rescue
I arrived in June, terrified but thrilled. Milan was overwhelming,fast-paced and full of stylish Italians who spoke way too quickly. But one slice of Italian pizza later, and suddenly, life felt a lot less scary.
Meeting the Team: Instant Comfort
The Avis Lombardia team was amazing,so warm and welcoming that I instantly felt at home. Their kindness helped me adjust, even though my Italian was limited to “ciao” and “grazie.” Thank goodness for hand gestures!
Tourist Mode: Duomo Adventures
My first month turned me into a full-on tourist. I explored Milan’s iconic spots like the Duomo, snapping selfies at every turn and indulging in gelato. The city is like a living postcard, and I loved every second.
Adjusting: Supermarket Struggles
Life in Milan came with its challenges, figuring out the transportation system, getting lost on my way to the supermarket, and learning how to adult in a new country. My roommate Diana was a big help, but Google Translate became my best friend.
Learning Italian: The Struggle is Real
I started language classes, and let’s just say it was intense. My classmates had a head start, while I was just trying to remember how to say “Non parlo italiano” (I don’t speak Italian). But hey, progress is progress!
Reflecting: Hadeel, the Tourist
As I look back, I can’t help but laugh. My first month was a rollercoaster of new experiences, minor freak-outs, and a lot of pasta. I still feel like a tourist, but that’s okay,I’m enjoying every moment of this Italian adventure, sauce stains and all!
