Visitors from Home
November is the greyest month of the year, at least in Finland. Here, however, the sun has visited several times, bringing some pleasant energy into everyday life. Writing feels strangely sticky, and it is difficult to remember everything that has happened this month. At the beginning of the month, my mom and sister visited me in Milan, which was wonderful. Unfortunately, I was very sick and had to take things especially slowly.
I received gifts from Finland: chocolate and rye bread. Oh, how I had missed them. My mom had also knitted me mittens and told me how she had thought of me with love while making them. Family is very important to me, more important than they realize. Every family member is precious to me, and it warmed my heart deeply that my mom and sister were here in Milan.
A week later, they returned to Finland, and I continued my normal routines here. I went to the office, did laundry, and ran errands. I also suffered from temporary tooth pain and went to the dentist. My wisdom teeth have decided to start growing in painfully. After some gentle care, the pain has calmed down, but I know that I will have to get them removed in Finland.
My normal routine did not last very long, because my dear friend flew to Italy with her boyfriend and their photographer. When I was still in Finland, she had asked if I would like to model the veils she has designed. I have learned to say yes to any opportunity that excites me even a little, so here they came with veils and cameras.
November has been cold, so modeling on the streets of Milan in a small skirt and in a moving tram was interesting in its own way, but most importantly, it was fun and rewarding.
My friend asked if there was anything I wanted from Finland, and although my mom and sister had just visited, there was one thing I had been missing. My absolute favorite Christmas drink is glögi. It is like hot mulled wine, but I enjoy it like tea, without alcohol. I have not found the original glögi here. So she brought me some, along with Christmas gingerbread cookies. It has been lovely to share these personal Finnish treats with others.
When it was time for my friends to return home, I rested for a couple of days and then we prepared for the first conference at the office for the weekend. At the same time, I received another visitor from Finland. It feels incredibly heartwarming to be surrounded by people who are beautiful both inside and out.
I have always had moments of homesickness or really friend sickness, and my heart is overflowing with gratitude that my November has been so full of human connection. I spent the end of the month enjoying quality time with a friend who also used to live here. She reminded me how beautiful this place I live in truly is.
In the middle of a cold and rainy November, people have brought so much love and warmth. I am ready for December, my favorite month. Until then,
bye.
With love
